Skylights & rooflights in Hollywood

Farmland became Hollywood’s homes; light comes through the roof.

Hollywood was fields and farms until the 1950s, then filled with post-war estates, shops and schools, so many of its roofs are likely to be family houses with scope for light from above.

From fields and farms to estates of near-identical semis

Hollywood is a large village in the Bromsgrove district of Worcestershire, about twenty miles by road west of central Coventry. It lies almost against the southern edge of Birmingham, with Highter’s Heath to the north and Wythall to the south. Until the 1950s it was a rural place of fields and farms. Extensive post-war development then replaced much of that land with housing estates, shops and schools, and that single fact tells you most of what a roofer needs to know about the village.

The houses from that period are typically semis and terraces with pitched tiled roofs, often concrete tile, built to a similar plan across whole streets. Lofts may be good-sized and lightly used. Rear extensions, added over the years, are often single-storey with a flat or low-pitched roof. Between the two, the village has a lot of the ordinary, solid family housing where a rooflight can make a real difference to a dark room.

The A435 once ran through the village and now bypasses it, and the Alcester Road still serves it. Two railway stations, Wythall and Whitlocks End, are close, with trains to Birmingham and Stratford-upon-Avon. That makes Hollywood a place where families may choose to extend, taking another bedroom from the loft or a bigger kitchen from the garden.

Not every home is a post-war semi. Older houses may survive from the rural village, and any converted outbuilding has its own roof: deep, sometimes irregular, and often with exposed timbers that must be left alone. We look at each one on its merits. The free survey is where we measure the rafters, check the covering and the room below, and prepare a fixed written quote saying which rooflight fits and what the finish will be.

One practical point about a village that grew quickly: streets of similar houses mean similar roof problems and similar solutions. A neighbour's rooflight on a similar house can be a useful guide for yours, with adjustments for the orientation, the trees and any extension at the back. We use that knowledge to give you a straightforward answer at the survey rather than a long list of possibilities.

Post-war semis, flat rears and the odd barn roof

Hollywood’s post-war semis, rear extensions and the odd barn-style home each suit a different unit. Choose from the roof you have: a tiled loft to a roof window, an extension with a flat roof to flat glass or a lantern, and a deep barn roof to a conservation-style rooflight.

  • Roof windowsFor lofts in post-war semis, where one or two windows turn storage into a bedroom or study.
  • Flat roof rooflightsFor single-storey rear extensions, with a new insulated upstand under the glass.
  • Misted rooflight replacementFor older units that have clouded between their two panes, replaced with new sealed glazing.
  • Sun tunnelsFor landings, en-suites and hallways in the middle of the house.

Bromsgrove District Council and bigger loft schemes

Bromsgrove District Council deals with planning in Hollywood. A typical house can often have a rooflight added with no application, yet each street differs, so conservation area status is established first and the price follows. Article 4 directions are confirmed by the council alone, and we direct you to the right team if a call is wise.

Building Control is notified by us for notifiable work, and the installation meets current Building Regulations. The rooflight planning guide holds the rules in detail.

A bigger scheme, such as a loft conversion with dormers as well as rooflights, changes the planning picture, and we say so at the survey. The rooflight part is ours to manage; for the rest we point to the right route and make sure the roof openings fit the wider plan.

01 Estates built on farmland

Tiled semis, roomy lofts and a village full of families extending.

On the roof

Roof windows in the tiled roof of a semi-detached house

A post-war semi in Hollywood usually has a tiled roof with a plain pitch, and the loft above is a generous space that was built for storage. Turning that space into a room starts with the roof window. We choose a size that suits the rafter spacing so the fewest are cut, and we fit it with flashing sets made for your tile profile.

Concrete tiles of this age are heavy and lap in a regular pattern, which helps: the flashing sits cleanly over the courses and the water runs off the frame without any fuss. Where an old tile has cracked or a batten has rotted next to the opening, we note it at the survey and include the fix in the written quote, so you know about it before the work begins, not after.

Estate houses were often built in pairs, and one neighbour’s loft room tells you a lot about what yours can do. We are glad to look at what a neighbour has done, and to say whether the same approach would suit your roof or whether yours calls for something different.

If the loft is to become a bedroom, there are also stair, insulation and fire-escape questions that sit with Building Control. We handle the notification for the rooflight itself and tell you plainly where other parts of a conversion need their own sign-off.

Ventilation of the roof void is also something to keep in mind. Some post-war roofs have eaves vents or a ridge vent that has been blocked by insulation over the years. We check that the new opening does not disturb the airflow, and we mention it if the loft would benefit from attention before the room is finished.

In the room

Inside, a roof window in a sloping ceiling needs a lined reveal that makes the most of the light. We build the lining from insulated plasterboard, angle it into the room wherever the roof depth permits, tape the joints and skim it smooth. The result is an opening that looks designed rather than cut.

The sill is as important as the head. A deep sill gives you somewhere to put a plant or a lamp, and a splayed sill sends light down onto the floor. The choice is talked through during the survey, since it changes how the room feels.

These lofts can get warm in summer under a tiled roof. A rooflight with a solar-control glazing and an internal blind keeps the room comfortable, and an electric opening unit lets heat out when you want it to go. We explain the options and the price of each before you decide.

When the job is done, plaster is ready to paint, rubble is cleared, and the loft is left as a room you can start decorating.

Daylight changes how a loft room is used. A study with a window above the desk, or a bedroom with a clear view of the sky, tends to feel like part of the house rather than a space tacked on. Positioning is part of the survey: we go up into the loft together and agree where the light is most useful before any measurements are taken for the quote.

Before any glass is ordered, the survey should confirm the rafter spacing, the roof pitch and the condition of the battens. Those three checks decide the kerb height, the flashing kit and the size of opening, and they are far cheaper to settle on paper than once the roof has been opened.

The short version

A post-war loft already has the space; the roof window and its lining supply the light.

02 Rear extensions and barn-style rooms

Single-storey additions, flat roofs and the glass that suits them.

On the roof

Many houses of this kind have been extended at the back. A single-storey kitchen or dining extension often has a flat or low-pitched roof, and some of these still carry the plastic domes fitted at the time. Flat glass or a lantern is a considerable improvement on a dome: clearer, better insulated and neater in the roof.

We fit it on a new insulated upstand built from the deck, lapped into the roof covering so the joint is watertight. If the deck has sagged or the covering is near the end of its life, we tell you at the survey. The cost of putting that right is shown in the quote beside the cost of the glass, so you can decide on the whole job.

Barn-style and cottage-style roofs call for different thinking. They tend to be deep, and sometimes the timbers are exposed inside. Here we usually recommend a rooflight that lies flush with the roof plane and sits between existing rafters, so the structure is left as it is and the roofline stays quiet.

For a flat roof that you also walk on, such as a balcony or a roof terrace over a ground-floor room, a walk-on rooflight lets daylight pass through the floor above into the room beneath.

For every flat roof job, the finish at the edges is where leaks begin, so we take our time over the upstand, the flashing and the junction with the existing covering. The roof is left sealed and tested before we leave, whatever the weather is doing.

In the room

Underneath a flat-roofed extension, the usual limit is a narrow ceiling opening. When the dome comes out, we widen the opening where the joists permit and splay the reveal, which turns a dark corner into a bright one. A kitchen that has relied on a small dome gets a lot more daylight for the same footprint.

In a barn-style room, the beams stay as they are. We frame the rooflight opening around them, line it neatly and plaster the reveal, so the new light and the old timber sit comfortably together.

Each finish is agreed with you at the survey, with the shape of the splay, the height of any internal upstand and the colour of the frame written down in the quote. When the room is finished you can see the point of every decision.

Some homeowners ask whether the new rooflight will make the room too bright or too hot. It can be specified with glazing that cuts glare and heat while letting daylight through, and the electric opening versions release warm air from a south-facing room. We talk through these options at the survey and price them clearly, so the choice is yours.

The reveal is left plastered and ready to paint, and any lighting that was in the way is reconnected or moved by arrangement.

Semi lofts, plastic domes, visit times: Hollywood

Is the loft in my Hollywood semi big enough for a roof window?

A post-war loft can often take one or two roof windows, and the free survey settles it. We measure the rafters, the pitch and the head height, say what will fit, and write the price down. If the loft needs other work before it can be a room, we say so plainly. Photographs of the loft and the outside of the roof help us give you a first view before we visit.

Can you swap the old plastic dome on a Hollywood extension?

Yes. We remove the dome and its kerb, build a new insulated upstand, fit flat glass or a lantern and weather it into the roof. Inside, the reveal is widened where the joists allow, then plastered and made good. Any problem with the deck is shown in the quote. If the dome has clouded or leaked, a replacement is a good time to think about the room beneath it as well.

How quickly can you visit a house in Hollywood?

Hollywood is roughly thirty-four minutes from central Coventry, so arranging a visit is simple. Photographs of the loft and of the outside of the roof help us give a first view in advance, and the form or WhatsApp is the quickest way to start. The survey is free; your fixed quote arrives in writing.
