Skylights & rooflights in Atherstone
Atherstone: glass overhead, plaster finished below.
Strung along Watling Street between canal and railway, Atherstone's detached family houses have the roof space and the ceiling height to make large rooflights worth doing properly.

Watling Street ribbon, canal locks and commuter houses
Atherstone is a market town in the far north of Warwickshire, 14.4 road miles from central Coventry, 26 minutes by road, north of the city. It is the administrative centre of the North Warwickshire district, and the council offices are in the town. The A5 passes it, the M42 is close, and the West Coast Main Line runs through with a station that has an hourly service to London and Crewe. That mix of road and rail access is what shapes a good deal of the housing we meet: family houses bought by people who travel for work and want a home that suits long days as well as weekends.
The town grew as a long ribbon along Watling Street, the old Roman road, and the Coventry Canal reached it in 1769 with a flight of eleven locks passing through. Behind the older frontage, the streets are a mix of eras. Older houses near the centre are likely to sit alongside semi-detached and detached houses with pitched tiled roofs, integral or attached garages, and rear gardens that have invited extensions.
A detached house has an advantage for rooflights that terraces lack: it has four elevations and often a roof that can take a unit without the neighbours' walls getting in the way. The loft may be boarded for storage, or converted already, and either way we check how it is framed. Modern trussed rafters cannot simply be cut, so the opening is sized to fit between trusses or the trusses are supported to a design before any timber goes. Older cut roofs with purlins give more freedom, and we say which you have after a look in the loft.
The other pattern is the extension. Where a family needs more room, the common answer is a kitchen-diner built across the back, often with a flat roof or a shallow pitch. That room is where a lantern or a large flat rooflight makes the biggest difference, because the walls of an extension often face the garden and the middle of the room stays dim. We survey, measure, and set out a fixed written quote you can read at the kitchen table.
The Atherstone survey is free, and we agree a time that suits you. WhatsApp or phone are both fine.
Atherstone also has a long memory. Henry Tudor is recorded as staying in the town the night before the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, and the Domesday Book of 1086 names the place. We mention it because a town with that depth of history can hold a few older buildings among the later family houses, and each of those is treated as its own job, with the covering, the structure and any protections checked before a figure is written down.
The practical upshot is that a street of Atherstone houses may look uniform from the pavement and turn out very different in the loft. One owner has a cut roof they can alter freely; the next door has trusses that need a designer. We never assume that one house tells us about its neighbour.
Boarded lofts and kitchen-diner extensions in Atherstone
In a commuter town like Atherstone, the usual starting points are a loft room at the top of a detached house and a large extension at the back. Match your roof to the line below and you will see the unit we would put in front of you first.
- Roof lanternsA kitchen-diner extension across the back of a detached house is where a roof lantern earns its place.
- Roof windowsA boarded or converted loft in a detached house can take a roof window set between the rafters or trusses.
- Electric & opening rooflightsOn a tall extension ceiling, an electric opening rooflight vents hot air at the touch of a button.
- Energy efficient rooflightsReplacing tired glazing in a family house with a high-performance unit helps the room hold its warmth.

North Warwickshire council and your Atherstone street
North Warwickshire Borough Council has its offices in Atherstone itself, and it is the planning authority for the town. Commuter houses with pitched roofs usually have the right to fit a rooflight without applying, subject to the council's confirmation and to any Article 4 direction covering the street. A conservation area check on your road comes before we quote, and the answer is given to you in writing.
If the house is listed, consent has to come first. Extension roofs and loft rooms are normally notifiable to Building Control, which we take care of ourselves. For the national picture in plain language, read our rooflight planning guide before the survey.
01 Commuter detached homes
Family houses with garages, boarded lofts and room to grow upwards.
On the roof

The detached houses that edge Atherstone usually have concrete or clay tiles, a clear pitched roof, and a loft that has been used for storage since the day the family moved in. When we open the hatch we look for the shape of the roof structure: purlins and rafters, or factory trusses. That one observation decides how a roof window can be installed.
On a trussed roof, the unit is sized to fit between two trusses. If a wider opening is wanted, we involve a designer, and the trusses around the opening are strengthened before anything is cut. On a cut roof with purlins, we have more freedom, and a pair of roof windows side by side can turn a loft room into a proper bedroom.
Fixing and flashing are matched to the tile. A flashing kit made for the profile of the tile keeps the junction watertight. We lift tiles around the opening, set the frame, weather the joints and relay the covering leaving the covering tidy, with the new glass sitting neatly in the slope.
For a house that has a loft conversion already, replacing an old, scratched or misted roof window with a new one is a short job when the opening matches. If the opening has to change we say so in the quote.
Garage roofs and side extensions on commuter houses are often forgotten. A small pitched or flat roof over a garage conversion can take a rooflight or a sun tunnel and turn a dark utility room or home office into a pleasant space, and the roof there is usually simpler to work on than the main house.
In the room

The inside of a loft room is where a rooflight earns its keep. A sloping ceiling gives you a finished reveal that can lean outwards, and the plaster edge catches the light and passes it down into the room instead of leaving a hard black shadow on one side.
We line the reveal with insulated board, skim it to match the walls and ceilings around it, and leave it ready for paint. If your loft room is carpeted and furnished, we protect the floor and furniture and clear our dust before we leave, since the people who live in a commuter house often return in the evening to find work done and the house tidy.
A roof window above a desk or a bed is a good place for blinds. We can note a VELUX window code or the manufacturer's blind fitting at the survey and plan the finish around it, so the plaster does not get in the way of the fixing.
Many commuter households now work from home on some days, and a bright loft office is a real asset. A roof window at the right height lets you see the sky from a desk without glare on the screen. We talk through where the screen will be before we set the position, because moving a window after the plaster is dry is a larger job than moving a mark on a rafter.
The short version
Look in the loft first: trusses or purlins decide how large the opening can be.
A roof window tidy outside, a reveal ready for paint inside.
02 Large extensions and roof lanterns
The kitchen-diner across the back, and the daylight it never quite had.
On the roof
A roof lantern is a raised glass structure, usually with a glazed pitch on each side and a ridge along the top. It sits on an insulated upstand fixed to the extension's roof, and it needs a structural opening large enough to carry the glass and the frame. We measure the room, the roof and the joists, and we make a drawing of the proposed position.
The upstand is the part that matters most for the long life of the lantern. It carries the load, insulates the edge and gives the roof covering something to be sealed up to. On a flat roof we bring the membrane up the upstand and make the join watertight; on a pitched extension roof the flashing runs around the base in lead or a matching material.
Should your extension carry an older flat roof close to the end of its life, you hear about it at the survey, because renewing the covering alongside the lantern is far the better course. One written quote then covers both. Otherwise you can end up lifting a new lantern a few seasons later to replace the roof around it.
A large opening raises the question of heat. Glazing specification, glass type and orientation all play a part, and we talk through the choices with you before you commit, so the room is bright in January and comfortable in July.
Opening rooflights are a common addition to large extensions, because glass overhead collects heat. A manual or electric opening panel lets warm air leave the room at the top, and rain sensors can close it on their own. The wiring route, the control position and the power supply are planned during the survey so nothing is left to chance at installation.

In the room
A lantern is as much a piece of interior design as a roof detail. The inside of the upstand is plastered into a clean, crisp frame, and the ceiling around it can be angled to bring the light into the corners of the room. When the finish is done well, the lantern looks as though the room was designed round it.
We make good the ceiling and walls where we have worked, leaving surfaces smooth and ready for decoration. If you plan to fit pendant lights or spotlights close to the lantern, tell us during the survey, because we can leave a route for the wiring before the plaster goes on.
In a kitchen-diner, a worktop or island below the glass will get the brightest daylight, and the table usually sits slightly off-centre. The reveal is shaped with that in mind.
Where a lantern replaces an older, smaller unit, the old ceiling opening is often too small for the new one. We enlarge it, frame it, and re-plaster the soffit in one visit. The result is a room where the old dome, the stained edge and the dim middle of the room have all gone, and the family notices the difference the first morning.

A lantern should look as if the room was drawn around it.
The short version
Renew a tired extension roof in the same visit as the lantern, and the upstand carries the weight, the insulation and the seal.
Boarded lofts, roof lanterns and survey times in Atherstone
Our detached house near Atherstone has a boarded loft. Can it take a roof window?
Usually yes. What matters is whether the roof is framed with trusses or with rafters and purlins, and we check that from inside the loft at the free survey. On trusses the unit is sized to sit between them, or the structure is strengthened first. We write the answer into a fixed quote so you see the whole plan before anything starts.
What does a roof lantern over a kitchen extension actually involve?
We survey the roof and room, agree a size and position, build an insulated upstand on the structure, fit the lantern, weather the roof up to it and finish the ceiling inside. Where the extension roof is near the end of its life, we recommend renewing it at the same time. Everything appears in one written quote, with a ten-year workmanship guarantee on our work.
How quickly could you survey a house in Atherstone?
Atherstone is 14.4 road miles from central Coventry, about 26 minutes, so we can arrange a visit at a time that suits you. A WhatsApp message with a picture of the roof or the room works well, and so does a phone call. We will fit the appointment around the household's working week.
